Rowan—Three birthdays
Among the Slavs, rowan nights were stormy summer and autumn evenings. In particular, rowan has three special times during the year, called its birthdays.
In spring, around May 25, the tree blooms. This is a time women call on the tree to protect their homes from fire and lightning. If the dawn of this day is red, it predicts summer will be filled with wildfires.
The second birthday occurs in summer, not long after the solstice, when the berries appear and begin to ripen.
The final one is during autumn, September 23, when the berries have completely ripened and can be harvested for magical and ordinary use. On this day, people hang the tree’s branches under roofs and around the edges of fields for protection.
